1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting Class V clockwise pivoted hub doubling from a pivot point at approximately eight o'clock, WDDR-006 for the 1970-D Roosevelt dime produces spread on STATES OF AMERICA, the left side of the torch flame, the uppermost olive leaves, the upper oak leaves, UNUM, and slightly on DIME. The pivot mechanism concentrates the widest spread on design elements farthest from the eight o'clock pivot axis, meaning the upper-right portion of the reverse shows the most pronounced doubling while areas near the pivot point remain essentially undoubled. Parallel SSW/NNE die scratches to the left of Roosevelt's lips mark the obverse die, and a small die gouge touching the top left of the R in AMERICA anchors the reverse identification. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under the designation 1970-D 10¢ WDDR-006, with no additional cross-references in other cataloging systems. Denver's 1970 dime production totaled 754,942,100 coins, struck in the copper-nickel clad composition that had replaced the 90% silver dimes beginning in 1965. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt obverse paired with a reverse torch, olive, and oak branch design remains one of the longest-running active designs in American coinage, and the multiple overlapping detail zones on the reverse -- flame, leaves, branches, bands, and lettering -- create numerous opportunities for hub doubling to manifest. The torch flame doubling on WDDR-006 is especially diagnostic because the flame's asymmetric contours make even slight displacement immediately apparent.
