1970-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1970-D 10¢ WDDR-003, this Roosevelt Dime displays a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 8 o'clock, visible on STATES OF AMERICA, slightly on the torch flame, the upper oak leaves, UNUM, and slightly on ONE DIME. The CW pivot at 8 o'clock positions the rotation's fulcrum in the lower-left quadrant of the die, producing maximum displacement on design elements in the upper-right area (STATES OF AMERICA) and progressively less doubling moving toward the pivot point — a geometry that explains why ONE DIME, located closer to the 8 o'clock position, shows only slight spread. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running south-southwest to north-northeast above the second T in TRUST. Reverse markers are concentrated in the AMERICA inscription area: a small die gouge midway between the top of the A and M in AMERICA, short die gouges extending from the rim above the left side of the M in AMERICA, and a die scratch running north from the top right side of the second U in UNUM. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 1970 in clad composition (outer layers of 75% copper, 25% nickel over a copper core) weighing 2.27 grams with a diameter of 17.91 mm. The 1970-D dime was part of the standard clad coinage produced after the 1965 composition change. The Class V pivoted hub doubling mechanism creates predictable patterns where doubling intensity varies with distance and direction from the pivot, providing attribution specialists with testable expectations about where doubling should and should not appear on a given specimen.
