Description

Notable for its availability in U.S. Mint Sets, the 1970-D Roosevelt dime DDR-003 displays a medium spread on the ES of STATES, OF AMERICA, the dot separator, DIME, and UNUM. VarietyVista documents this variety across two distinct die pairs with six total stages. The first pair (UVC-538/DMR-005) progresses through Stages A-D: Stage B at early-to-mid die state shows a die scratch south from the middle of the A of STATES and a short die scratch in the field by the eyebrow, with the mintmark centered. Stage D at late-to-mid die state adds a vertical die scratch in the middle of the O of OF. The second die pair (UVC-539/DMR-006) covers Stages E-F, beginning at late die state with a die scratch north-northwest from the upper B of PLURIBUS, a changed obverse die at mid-die state, and the mintmark positioned far right of center. Stage F shows the reverse at very late die state with the obverse at late die state. The mintmark position shift between die pairs, from centered to far right, provides an immediate diagnostic for distinguishing the two pairings. Mint Set availability enhances the likelihood of finding uncirculated specimens.
