1970-D Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1970D-01
Error
Description
Cataloged as CCL(TI)-1c-1970D-01, this 1970-D Lincoln Memorial cent preserves evidence of a Type I counter clash — a phenomenon that occurs when two separate die clash events strike at slightly different positions, and the offset between them generates a phantom design element that exists on neither die independently. At least two and possibly three distinct clash events have been identified. The first clash left an impression of the Y from LIBERTY on the reverse die. The second event struck at a slightly different alignment, obliterating most of the first event's clash marks while depositing its own transferred design elements — including a second Y of LIBERTY impression offset from the first. This positional offset created the counter clash: the gap between the two clash marks produced what appears to be an extra column to the right of the second Memorial column, a feature generated solely by the interaction of two misaligned clash events. A third, older clash event may be evidenced by marks visible in bay four of the Memorial, though this remains less certain. Discovered by Joe Koelling, this variety demonstrates one of die clash analysis's most fascinating phenomena — the creation of ghost design elements through the superposition of multiple clash impressions at different registrations.
