1970-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-031
ErrorDescription
Submitted by researcher Larry Alford, WDDO-031 on the 1970-D Lincoln Memorial cent features doubling above the 7 and below the L in LIBERTY, accompanied by one of the most extensively documented die marker profiles in the 1970-D DDO catalog. The richness of Alford's marker documentation makes this variety among the most readily attributable in the entire series, with diagnostics spread across virtually every zone of both surfaces. On the obverse, die scratches extend from the numeral 7 and from Lincoln's eyebrow area, providing markers in both the date zone and the portrait zone. Additional scratches thread through IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY — the two legends that frame the obverse design — while a die gouge near the rim to the left of IN serves as a landmark-scale marker visible even under low magnification. The reverse carries its own extensive marker set: the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro) appear overabraded — polished beyond normal die maintenance levels — and scratches traverse the reverse surface in patterns documented across the die's service life. A supplementary submission added still more markers to the existing documentation, expanding the diagnostic toolkit available for attribution. This layered documentation — original submission plus subsequent additions — reflects the collaborative nature of variety research, where multiple researchers examining different specimens from the same die contribute complementary observations. No cross-references to other attribution services have been established, making Alford's submission through Wexler's system the sole published reference for this variety. Collectors who encounter a 1970-D cent with doubling above the 7 and below the L should check for the eyebrow scratches and the overabraded FG initials as confirmation markers.
