1970-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-027
Error
Description
Representing the second dual-variety die in the 1970-D DDO roster, WDDO-027 is also cataloged as WRPM-005 — a D/D Northeast repunched mintmark — combining doubled die obverse characteristics with a repunched Denver mintmark on the same working die. The doubling appears above the 7 in the date, consistent with the vertical displacement pattern that characterizes many 1970-D DDOs, while the mintmark shows the original D punch displaced to the northeast of the final position, leaving a partial secondary image visible adjacent to the primary D. This dual attribution was submitted by Andrew Kezeli, whose discovery contribution added both a DDO and an RPM to the 1970-D catalog simultaneously. Die markers span both surfaces, with obverse diagnostics including a scratch extending from the bottom of the 9 in the date to Lincoln's vest — a prominent linear marker that provides quick visual confirmation. The reverse carries its own set of markers that further distinguish this die from the dozens of other DDO dies documented for the 1970-D cent. Like WDDO-017/WRPM-004, this dual-variety die demonstrates that the two primary sources of die preparation errors — hub doubling during design transfer and mintmark punching misalignment — operated as independent processes that could both affect the same working die. Collectors who specialize in either DDO or RPM varieties will find WDDO-027/WRPM-005 relevant to both pursuits, and the coin's dual attribution typically enhances its market appeal beyond what either variety alone would command. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch runs NNE from the top of the T in LIBERTY. A die scratch runs SSW from the bottom left of the L in LIBERTY. Reverse: A die gouge can be found between the O and N in ONE. A die scratch runs WSW from the bottom of the 9 in the date to the vest. Reverse: Two short die scratches run from WSW to ENE above the Memorial roof on the right side. A die scratch connects the bottoms of the T and E in STATES.
