Description

With medium spread visible on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date, DDO-009 on the 1970-D Lincoln cent (die markers UVC-2298, DMR-018) displays a doubling distribution similar to DDO-007 but at greater intensity. Where DDO-007 showed light spread on a comparable set of design elements, DDO-009's medium classification indicates the hub displacement was more pronounced, producing secondary images that are easier to detect under magnification. The UVC sequence number jump from 2246 (DDO-008) to 2298 places this die later in the documentation order, though not necessarily later in production chronology. Denver's 1970 cent run produced enough doubled die varieties to fill nine or more catalog positions (DDO-001 through at least DDO-009), reflecting both the inherent variability of the multi-squeeze hubbing process and the large number of working dies required for Denver's substantial output. Each of these dies went through the same manufacturing sequence — multiple hub impressions to sink the design to full depth — and each represented an opportunity for microscopic misalignment between successive squeezes. Collectors building sets of 1970-D doubled dies will find DDO-009 occupying a satisfying middle ground: strong enough to confirm without frustration, yet requiring the deliberate examination and magnification that separates variety collecting from casual coin inspection.
