1969-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
VarietyVista's DDR-011 for the 1969-D Kennedy half dollar shows medium spread on all letters around the rim, all stars in the heraldic circle, and the upper rays of the eagle's glory, making this one of the more broadly affected DDR varieties in the silver-clad Kennedy series. Tracked under UVC-147 with die markers reference DMR-005, the die life documentation spans four stages. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at late-to-mid die state (LMDS) reveals die clashing through the upper portion of DOLLAR, accompanied by strong die scratches on both the reverse and the obverse. Stage C shows both sides at late die state, and Stage D reaches very late die state (VLDS), indicating this die pair remained in service through extensive deterioration. The comments note the reverse die variety RDV-003 paired with obverse die variety ODV-002a in the Modified Design Obverse (MDO) configuration. The RDV and ODV designations track the master die lineage within the Kennedy series, where multiple reverse and obverse design variants coexisted during the 1960s as the Mint refined Gilroy Roberts's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse. Denver struck 129,881,800 half dollars in 1969, the final year of the 40% silver-clad composition before the transition to copper-nickel clad in 1971. The four-stage die life documentation, reaching all the way to VLDS, provides collectors with a comprehensive die deterioration roadmap and makes DDR-011 a valuable reference point for understanding die wear progression on late-1960s Kennedy production dies.
