Description

Fifth doubled die reverse for the 1969 Denver Kennedy Half Dollar, DDR-005 shows medium spread on all letters around the rim, all stars, and the upper rays of the heraldic eagle design. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-362 and DMR-011, the variety progresses through three stages. Stage A at early die state is identified by a die gouge next to the rim between the C and A of AMERICA and a dot, with the obverse also at EDS. Stage B at mid-die state develops strong north-south die scratches on both the reverse and obverse, plus a small rim cud to the right of the I in LIBERTY — a progressive defect indicating metal loss at the die's edge. Stage C is late die state, unconfirmed. The die pairing is classified as RDV-003 with ODV-002b and carries no master die obverse doubling. The 1969-D was struck during the early clad composition era of the Kennedy Half, two years after the reduction from 40% silver. The rim cud's appearance at mid-die state helps collectors bracket when their specimen was struck within this die's production sequence.
