1969-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
VarietyVista assigns UVC-148 and DMR-006 to the 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDR-003, documenting a light spread on "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the stars beneath those letters, with the strongest doubling concentrated on the word "OF." The Kennedy Half Dollar's 1965-1970 silver-clad composition — 40% silver overall, consisting of an 80% silver outer layer bonded to a 21% silver inner core — gives this variety an added collectibility dimension, as silver-clad Kennedys are inherently more desirable than the post-1970 copper-nickel clad issues. The die variety is classified as RDV-003 paired with ODV-002a, described as "MDO" (Minor Design Obverse) — a die variety notation indicating a detectable but subtle design variation on the obverse die paired with this doubled reverse. Stage A in Early Die State is unconfirmed; Stage B at Mid Die State introduces a die gouge positioned above the letter E of "AMERICA," with the obverse also showing MDS characteristics; Stage C in Late Die State remains unconfirmed. Denver struck 129,881,800 half dollars in 1969, a substantial output that nonetheless represented a decline from the record-setting volumes of 1964, as public hoarding of Kennedy Halves had moderated by the late 1960s. Three documented DDRs for the 1969-D date establishes a modest but meaningful variety catalog for collectors working through the silver-clad series year by year. The concentration of strongest doubling on "OF" — a short word where even slight separation is readily apparent — makes this variety one of the more accessible Kennedy DDRs for visual confirmation under standard 10x magnification.
