1968-S Variety WWHO-001
Error
Description
This listing documents the San Francisco Mint proof manifestation of WWHO-001, the doubled working hub obverse that affected Lincoln Memorial cent dies across all three mint facilities in 1968. Attributed by the Wexler team, a doubled working hub differs fundamentally from a doubled die: while a doubled die affects only a single working die, a doubled working hub transfers its doubling to every working die produced from it, potentially creating multiple doubled die varieties across different mints and strike types from a single hub error event. The proof version of this doubled working hub is particularly significant because San Francisco proof dies underwent more rigorous inspection than Philadelphia or Denver business strike dies, yet this hub doubling was subtle enough to pass quality control and enter production. Proof coins struck from dies carrying the WWHO-001 doubling display the doubled features with exceptional clarity thanks to the mirror-like fields and frosted devices characteristic of proof manufacture. The same doubled working hub appears on 1968-D business strikes and 1968 (no mint mark) Philadelphia issues, but the proof striking process at San Francisco preserves the diagnostic details with superior fidelity, making proof specimens the preferred choice for study and illustration. The 1968-S proof cent was the first standard proof issue since 1964, after three years of Special Mint Sets mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm proof planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc at the San Francisco Mint.
