Description
The 1968 (S) Jefferson Nickel, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 collection. The U.S. Mint produced 103.4 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 53% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Mint marks returned, now placed on the obverse near the date rather than the traditional reverse location. San Francisco resumed proof-only production. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $6 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4081.
