1968-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Sharing the same progressive spread pattern as DDR-008 but originating from a different working die, the 1968-S Jefferson nickel DDR-002 shows light doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA increasing from left to right. VarietyVista tracks this under UVC-1344 with die marriage DMR-028. The similar description between DDR-002 and DDR-008 highlights a recurring challenge in die variety attribution: two different dies can exhibit the same general type of hub misalignment (rotational, with similar pivot-point positioning) while being entirely separate working dies with distinct microscopic die markers. San Francisco produced this issue as part of a production run that generated at least eight documented doubled die reverses. Distinguishing DDR-002 from DDR-008 requires comparing the specific UVC and DMR die identifiers rather than relying solely on the doubling description, since both show left-to-right increasing spread on the same text elements. The UVC-1344/DMR-028 combination for DDR-002 versus UVC-1350/DMR-034 for DDR-008 confirms these are distinct dies, but collectors examining specimens need supplementary die markers — fine die polish lines, die scratches, or contact marks unique to each working die — to make the distinction when the variety census alone does not suffice. As DDR-002, this variety holds the secondary position in the 1968-S reverse census.
