1968 Variety WMHR-001

Description

WMHR-001 on the 1968-P Washington Quarter is a Working Master Hub Reverse variety, cross-referenced as CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI. Master hub doubling differs fundamentally from a standard doubled die: rather than affecting a single working die, the doubling is impressed into the working master hub itself, meaning every working die produced from that hub carries the exact same doubling — and therefore every coin struck from any of those dies. The SD-1 designation identifies the pointed-leaf diagnostic: the leaf directly to the left of the arrowheads is pointed at the top, distinguishing this master hub from the SD-2 hub which bears a rounded leaf. CONECA documents working dies with this identical doubling across the years 1968 through 1974, spanning multiple mints. On this 1968 Philadelphia business strike, a spread toward the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath, decreasing from left to right. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
