Description

Numbered as the fifth repunched mint mark for the 1968-D Lincoln cent, RPM-005 adds to the growing roster of hand-punch errors documented for this historically significant date. The 1968 Denver Mint production represented the first year that repunched mint mark varieties were possible on Lincoln cents since 1964, because the intervening three years under the Coinage Act of 1965 had eliminated mint marks entirely from U.S. coinage. When the D returned to Denver's cent dies, the manual punching process immediately generated the alignment variations that error collectors prize. RPM-005 carries die markers UVC-916 and DMR-006, with three die stages recorded: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The fully unconfirmed status of all three stages suggests that this variety has been documented from a limited number of specimens, with the die state attributions based on observed characteristics that have not yet been verified across multiple examples. Unconfirmed stages represent opportunities for collectors: finding a definitively identifiable specimen in Stage A (with fresh, sharp features and minimal die wear) or Stage C (showing significant deterioration and die cracks) would advance the variety's documentation and contribute to the research record.
