1968-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Cataloged as the sixth repunched mint mark for the 1968-D Lincoln cent, RPM-006 is among the later entries in the date's RPM catalog and demonstrates that the hand-punching of mint marks in 1968 generated errors across multiple dies throughout the production year. Each RPM variety documents a different die on which the D mint mark was improperly applied, and the seven RPMs cataloged for the 1968-D cent suggest that at least seven dies (and likely many more, given that not every RPM variety is equally detectable) received mint marks with visible misalignment. Die markers UVC-917 and DMR-007 identify RPM-006, with three die stages documented: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The unconfirmed status across all stages, shared with several other 1968-D RPM varieties, reflects the challenges of die state research for a high-mintage date: while examples of the RPM itself may be obtainable, collecting specimens that span the full range from early to late die states requires access to a larger pool of coins and patience in sorting through potentially hundreds of examples. The 1968-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint during the first year of restored mint marks, and RPM varieties from this date hold a special place in the catalog as the resumption of a variety type that had been absent for three years.
