Description

Documented by CudsOnCoins as CU-10c-1967-01 and cross-referenced as RDC-67-2, this 1967 Roosevelt Dime exhibits a cud error from a die rim fracture. The 1967 date falls within the 1965-1967 transition period when the United States Mint eliminated mintmarks from all coins — a deliberate measure to discourage speculative hoarding during the shift from silver to copper-nickel clad coinage mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965. Without mintmarks, all 1967 dimes were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco without facility identification, making mint attribution impossible. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and first issued in 1946, had carried 90% silver through 1964 before transitioning to the clad composition of copper-nickel bonded to a pure copper core. Cuds form when die rim segments fracture under striking pressure and can no longer transfer design detail, leaving raised featureless areas on the struck coin. The RDC-67-2 cross-reference ties this variety to the Roosevelt Dime Cud catalog, a specialized reference for cud varieties within the denomination. This is the first documented cud for the no-mintmark 1967 dime.
