Description

Reported by ZAP's Coins, DDO-002 on the 1966 Washington quarter is distinguished by strong notched serifs on LIBERTY, paired with reverse die variety RDV-005. Notched serifs represent a visually distinctive form of hub doubling where the secondary impression intersects the serif terminations at a slight offset, creating small notch-like separations at letter stroke endings rather than the parallel shadowing seen in spread-type doubling. This notching can be particularly striking on the serif lettering used on Washington quarters, where the decorative extensions at letter terminals amplify the visual impact of modest hub misalignment. The 1966 quarter belongs to the second year of the no-mintmark era (1965-1967), struck in copper-nickel clad composition without mint identification to discourage hoarding during the silver transition. The strong classification means the notching is readily visible under low magnification. The RDV-005 die pairing provides reverse confirmation for complete attribution.
