PC-25c-1965-03R Pre-Cud

Description

Struck during the pivotal first year of clad coinage in the United States, the PC-25c-1965-03R captures a pre-cud on the reverse of a 1965 Washington Quarter. The 1965 date marks the transition mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965, when the quarter changed from 90% silver to the copper-nickel clad sandwich still used today, giving coins from this changeover year inherent historical significance. A pre-cud forms when internal die cracks develop beneath the die surface due to metal fatigue but have not yet fractured through to create a full cud — the die is breaking apart from within. Pre-cuds are rarer than full cuds because the die must be removed at exactly the right moment, after internal fracturing begins but before the surface breaks away. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as the third pre-cud on a 25-cent denomination from 1965, the R suffix identifies this as a reverse variety. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter was struck at 24.3mm on the new clad planchets. Inspect the reverse for telltale signs of subsurface die failure.
