Description

Eleventh doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDO-011 comes from Philadelphia's proof production during the inaugural year of the Kennedy series. Proof Kennedy Half Dollars were struck as part of the 1964 proof set, with an approximate mintage of 3.95 million sets, and the proof die manufacturing process, while more carefully controlled than business strike die production, remained vulnerable to hubbing misalignment. Gilroy Roberts' portrait of President Kennedy appears with enhanced contrast on proof specimens, where the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices can make doubling either more or less apparent depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions. Eleven DDO dies from a single proof production year represents a notable concentration, suggesting that multiple hub-to-die sessions were affected by alignment issues. No specific die markers have been documented for this variety. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1964 50¢ Pr WDDO-011. Proof DDOs from the Kennedy series are collected by both variety specialists and Kennedy Half Dollar enthusiasts, creating steady market demand. Attributed by the Wexler Team.
