Description

Carrying a replacement designation, this 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel was formerly cataloged as WDDR-220 and promoted to the WDDR-008 slot after the original listing was delisted as too minor to warrant inclusion. Discovered by John Conway, the variety exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the spread decreasing slightly from left to right. The reverse die marker is a die dot to the right of the long left window on the Monticello facade, providing a precise architectural reference point for attribution. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDR-008 Proof. The catalog renumbering process ensures that each numerical slot contains a variety meeting current documentation standards, and WDDR-220's promotion to the -008 position reflects its superior diagnostic characteristics compared to the original occupant. The 1964 proof set was the last produced at Philadelphia before the hiatus, and the enormous 1964 proof mintage has yielded a large body of doubled die varieties still being cataloged and reorganized decades later.
