1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1964 50¢ Pr WDDO-008, this proof Kennedy Half Dollar exhibits a strong Class II spread towards the center on LIBERTY, the upper hair details, and IN, with a lesser spread on GOD WE TRUST and the date — a convergent doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted inward, producing doubled images concentrated on the interior side of the affected design elements. Significant die characteristics include the Accented Hair obverse style. Obverse die markers comprise a small die gouge (dot) south of the left side of the D in GOD and a small die gouge (dot) on the neck midway between the ear and the designer's initials. The reverse features a straight G in the FG (Frank Gasparro) initials. Cross-referenced as CONECA 15-O-II; the attribution notes explain this variety was previously listed as WDDO-032 and was reassigned a new number to fill the large gaps in the listings created by the discovery of three obverse doubled working hubs — a catalog maintenance action that consolidated the numbering system after certain earlier entries were reclassified. The 1964 proof Kennedy Half Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver composition — the only year of full silver Kennedy Halves — weighing 12.50 grams with a diameter of 30.61 mm. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse portrait of President John F. Kennedy, while Frank Gasparro designed the Presidential Seal reverse. The Accented Hair style, where additional detail appears in the hair above Kennedy's ear, is itself a collected subvariety, and its combination with Class II hub doubling on this proof die creates a coin with multiple layers of numismatic interest.
