Description

Identified by a small bar present below the L of LIBERTY, the 1964 WDDO-031 carries a detailed set of die markers that assist in attribution. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 1¢ WDDO-031 and attributed by the Wexler Team, the variety displays distinctive tooling marks on both surfaces. On the obverse, three parallel die scratches run between the rim and the L of LIBERTY, a die scratch extends south-southwest to north-northeast to the right of the D of GOD, and a strong die scratch runs south from the left side of the 6 in the date, accompanied by numerous lighter parallel die scratches throughout the date area. The reverse markers are equally diagnostic: a die scratch runs from the lower right side of the I of UNITED to the top of the left Memorial roof tip, a long gently curving die scratch extends from the bottom of the E of UNITED to the upper left first U of UNUM, a long die scratch runs from the top left roof north-northwest to the left of the first S of STATES, and die scratches run from the lower right E of ONE through CEN of CENT. These die scratches represent tooling marks from die preparation at the Philadelphia Mint — remnants of polishing, grinding, or finishing operations performed on the die before it entered service. For collectors, such detailed diagnostics provide multiple confirmation points beyond the doubled die obverse itself, significantly reducing the risk of misattribution. Struck from the Philadelphia Mint's 1964 output of 2,648,575,000 business strikes on a 3.11-gram, 19mm bronze planchet of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc.
