1964 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-035
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-105 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this proof 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-035 shows light quadruple spread on WE TRUST, the 4 of the date, RTY of LIBERTY, and the hair at the back of the head. Quadruple spread — four distinct hub impressions rather than the standard two — represents an unusually complex hubbing sequence where the die received at least four improperly aligned impressions during manufacture. Die markers under UVC-440 and DMR-055 track three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B showing both in Mid-Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). VarietyVista notes the die variety designations ODV-002/RDV-002 with the "Flared G" reverse variety, plus the FS-105 Cherrypickers' listing. Thirty-five DDOs cataloged for the 1964 proof Kennedy Half reflect the intensive variety research on this first-year-of-issue coin, produced during a period of extraordinary public demand following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963. The proof issue was struck at Philadelphia using Gilroy Roberts' portrait obverse, and the 1964 proof half dollar remains one of the most actively collected modern U.S. coins.
