Description

From the inaugural year of the Kennedy Half Dollar, DDO-026 documents a medium spread on the date and Y of LIBERTY, with lighter spread across IN GOD WE TRUST on this proof issue struck in 90% silver — the only year the denomination carried full silver composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-338 (DMR-041), Stage A shows die gouge dots on the rim below the 4 of the date as an early die state diagnostic. The obverse is identified as ODV-001, the celebrated "Accented Hair" variety where hair lines above Kennedy's ear are especially pronounced — a feature polished away on later dies, making Accented Hair specimens distinctly desirable. The reverse pairs as RDV-001 with the "Straight G" designation, referring to Frank Gasparro's initial shape on the reverse. The combination of DDO-026 doubling with the Accented Hair obverse places this variety at the intersection of two collecting interests: die variety attribution and the Accented Hair premium that this first-year proof commands. Collectors should examine the date — particularly the 4, where rim gouge dots confirm the die — and the Y of LIBERTY.
