1964 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-020
Error
Description
Appearing on the inaugural proof issue of America's most iconic modern half dollar, this 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-020 presents medium spread across multiple obverse design elements. The doubling affects IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the designer's initials, while the letters LI of LIBERTY also show secondary impressions. Beyond the inscriptions, rotation is visible on one of Kennedy's eyes and the hair curls at the top of his head, adding portrait-level detail to the variety's diagnostic profile. Struck in 90% silver as part of the first-year Kennedy Half Dollar production, this coin was manufactured from the Straight G reverse die (ODV-002/RDV-001), a specific die pairing that identifies the reverse variety. All three die states have been confirmed for this variety — early, mid, and late — a rare level of documentation that provides collectors with a complete picture of the die's working life. Cataloged by VarietyVista with attribution numbers UVC-026 and DMR-026, DDO-020 represents one of many doubled die obverse varieties produced during the massive 1964 proof Kennedy production run, when enormous public demand for the new design pushed die usage to intense levels at the Philadelphia Mint.
