Description

Medium spread on WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the 4 of the date, RTY of LIBERTY, and all hair at the top and back of the head — with light spread on IN GOD — identifies this eleventh doubled die obverse for the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, a proof strike carrying die markers UVC-016 and DMR-016. The proof designation is significant, as this variety was produced on specially prepared planchets using polished dies at the Philadelphia Mint, where proof coins were struck with multiple impressions for maximum detail and mirror-like fields. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B with both in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The die pair is identified as ODV-002 with RDV-002 (Flared G), indicating the reverse die exhibits a distinctive flared G in the eagle's design. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar — first struck just months after President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963 — is among the most emotionally significant coins in American numismatics. The 90% silver composition used exclusively in 1964 makes this the only year of full-silver Kennedy Half Dollar production. Cataloged by VarietyVista.
