1964 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004

Description

Among the most dramatic doubled die obverses from the inaugural year of the Kennedy Half Dollar, DDO-004 on the 1964 Proof issue exhibits medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and TY of LIBERTY, escalating to triple impressions on the serifs of WE TRUST and TY. The triple effect — where three distinct hub impressions are visible rather than the typical two — indicates the die received at least three separate hubbing strikes at slightly different orientations. Cataloged as UVC-009 with DMR-009, Stage B shows a diagnostic die gouge appearing as a dot east of E in WE, at mid-die state. This variety carries the ODV-002 and RDV-002 pairing, commonly known as the "Flared G" design variety, where the serif on the G in GOD flares outward more prominently than on other die pairings.
