1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
Error
Description
Doubled die formation on proof coinage has a distinctive character: proof dies are polished to a mirror finish before use, and when a misalignment occurs between hubbing sessions, the resulting variety carries that displacement onto a mirrored surface where the secondary image is visible against the highly reflective field under proper lighting. WDDO-007, attributed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1964 50¢ WDDO-007, is one of the lowest-numbered doubled die obverse entries from the first year of Kennedy Half Dollar proof production. The 1964 proof Kennedy's 90% silver composition gives surviving examples measurable intrinsic metal value alongside their numismatic value — a combination that sustained public hoarding in 1964 and ensures a large certified population available for variety attribution. The Kennedy Half Dollar obverse carries LIBERTY arcing above the date, IN GOD WE TRUST below the portrait, and the Roberts portrait with fine hair detail — all of which may carry the secondary doubled impression depending on the specific die pairing.
