1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1964 proof Jefferson nickel WDDR-009 shows close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread increasing slightly from left to right. This variety was formerly listed as WDDR-218 and subsequently renumbered to replace the original WDDR-009, which was delisted for being too minor. This reverse die forms a die marriage with the obverse listed as 1964 Pr 5¢ WDDO-004, meaning collectors who locate the reverse doubling should also examine the obverse for its own doubled die characteristics. On the reverse, die scratches on the rim above NUM of UNUM serve as the primary die marker. Class II distorted hub doubling results from warping of the hub during the impression process, producing a spread pattern that differs from the rotational or offset spreads seen in other doubling classes. The left-to-right increase in spread is consistent with this distortion mechanism. Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint in the final year before the transition to copper-nickel clad coinage, this die marriage rewards examination of both sides.
