Description

Exhibiting Class V (Pivoted Hub) doubling, this 1964 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-002 shows nice spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, the LLO of MONTICELLO, and the right side of the building. Pivoted Hub doubling occurs when the hub rotates around a single pivot point during the secondary impression, producing spread that increases with distance from the pivot axis — explaining why widely distributed inscription elements like STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM display the effect prominently. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Reverse die markers anchor attribution: a die dot sits on the left side of the top of the dome, and a short slanted die gouge appears near the rim between the second S of STATES and the O of OF. These two reverse markers — dome dot and rim gouge — create a reliable identification pair. As a proof coin struck during the final year of pre-1965 coinage, this 1964 issue was produced in substantial proof quantities before the Coinage Act of 1965 temporarily suspended proof production. The Class V pivot mechanism distinguishes WDDR-002 from the more common Class II varieties in the 1964 proof nickel catalog.
