Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1964-D 25-cent WDDO-013, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 1964-D Washington quarter struck at the Denver Mint. The 1964 quarter represents the final year of 90% silver composition for circulating Washington quarters, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter, before the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the transition to copper-nickel clad coinage. Denver produced an extraordinary 704,135,528 quarters in 1964, a massive production run driven by coin hoarding and the impending composition change. The doubling on WDDO-013 manifests as a very close spread towards the center, visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, as notches on the lower left letters in LIBERTY, and on the lower queue (ponytail) of John Flanagan's Washington portrait. This center-directed spread suggests the hub shifted slightly inward between hubbing impressions, compressing the design elements toward the coin's center. Obverse die markers include a short strong die gouge running northeast from the knot in the queue ribbon, a distinctive feature that provides reliable confirmation of the correct die. The reverse carries a heavy die scratch running from the lower S to the T in STATES, a die crack running down the eagle's right wing, and two die chips below the UN in UNITED on the right wing.
