1964-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

Listed in the Wexler Files as 1964-D 25¢ WDDO-012, this Washington quarter displays a spread toward the center on the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue. Obverse die markers include three die scratches running from the E of WE to the upper neck, a short die gouge extending from the lower right of the center bar of the E in LIBERTY, and a die scratch running southeast from the lower right of the R in LIBERTY. A die crack runs across the base of the bust into the lower queue on the right, and a heavy die crack runs E/W through the upper hair. No reverse markers have been noted. The 1964-D Washington quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint and holds particular historical significance as the last year of 90% silver quarter production. The extraordinary mintage that year — driven by a nationwide coin shortage — means that examples are widely available, giving variety collectors ample material to search for WDDO-012. The combination of date spread, designer initials doubling, and lower queue thickening gives attributors three obverse areas to examine, while the heavy die crack through the hair provides an additional confirmation marker.
