Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1964-D 25¢ WDDO-004 with no other known cross-references, this Denver Washington quarter displays a very close counterclockwise spread visible on LIBERTY as notches on the upper left and lower right corners of the letters, with slight doubling also appearing on the bottom of the ribbon. On the obverse, a die scratch runs southwest to northeast below the I in LIBERTY, a die crack crosses the base of the bust and extends into the lower queue, and several die scratches run north-northeast from the front of the nose. The reverse carries its own set of confirming markers: two parallel die scratches run east-southeast from the upper R in QUARTER, a die scratch runs south-southwest to north-northeast between the second L and the A in DOLLAR, and a large die chip sits on the lower back of the eagle's head. The 1964 Denver quarter saw enormous mintage as the last year of silver quarter production, and the counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY producing notched letter corners provides a distinctive diagnostic that can be confirmed without extreme magnification.
