1964-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

The D mintmark on this 1964-D Roosevelt dime is repunched with the secondary D to the south of the primary — a D/D South variety attributed by VarietyVista under UVC-488 and DMR-036. This is FS-506, a Fivaz-Stanton listed variety. The obverse die is ODV-011, featuring a blunt 9 in the date. Stage A shows both the reverse and obverse in early die state. The 1964-D Roosevelt dime was struck at Denver in 90% silver, the final year of the silver Roosevelt dime series — 1965 clad coinage replaced the silver composition permanently. Denver struck over 1.35 billion dimes in 1964, the largest single-year silver dime mintage in U.S. Mint history, as the country began hoarding silver coins in anticipation of the composition change. The FS-506 designation places this variety in the Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties, increasing its collector visibility beyond the VarietyVista census. The blunt 9 obverse die (ODV-011) provides a useful pre-confirmation screening step before examining the repunched mintmark.
