1964-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

A particularly notable entry in the 1964-D doubled die obverse catalog, WDDO-012 is a dual-variety coin that exhibits both a doubled die obverse and a repunched mint mark, cataloged separately as WRPM-017 — a D over D tilted or rotated repunched mint mark. This combination of two distinct die anomalies on a single working die makes WDDO-012 especially appealing to variety specialists, as it documents two independent events during the die's preparation: the hubbing misalignment that created the doubled obverse and the hand-punching error that produced the tilted repunched D mint mark. The doubled die component manifests in part as a small bar visible under the L of LIBERTY. The die is further identified by extensive markers on both sides. On the obverse, a die scratch extends southwest from the bottom of the B in LIBERTY, another die scratch runs southwest from the left side of the 9 to the vest, and numerous die scratches run from southwest to northeast both left and right of the bust. On the reverse, a die scratch runs from north-northwest to south-southeast between the upper A and T of STATES, a die scratch curves north from the upper left O in OF, several die scratches run from west-northwest to east-southeast through the bottoms of the third, fourth, and fifth Memorial bays, and a die scratch curves northwest from the bottom left side of the eleventh Memorial column. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1964-D 1c WDDO-012, this variety was attributed by the Wexler Team. The coin was struck at the Denver Mint as part of the record 3,799,071,500 cent production in 1964, the last year Denver cents carried the D mint mark before the 1965-67 removal. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc planchet at 19mm and 3.11 grams.
