1964-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Displaying Class II spread towards center on ERTY of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, designer's initials, and hair detail at the top and back of Kennedy's head, this sixth doubled die obverse for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar documents hub doubling on the highest-mintage silver half dollar in U.S. history. Denver struck over 156 million of these 90% silver coins in 1964, the series' debut year honoring the recently assassinated President Kennedy. Die markers include a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the upper 4 in the date and a small die gouge (dot) southeast of the Y in LIBERTY on the obverse, with a Straight G in FG on the reverse. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 50¢ WDDO-006 with no other known references, this variety was attributed by the Wexler Team. The Class II spread towards center indicates distorted hub doubling, where deformation of the hub produced design elements that appear to converge inward rather than showing the outward separation more commonly associated with rotated hub doubling. Hair detail doubling at the top and back of Kennedy's head provides a particularly diagnostic feature for attribution.
