1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Strong hub doubling marks this 1963 Philadelphia Roosevelt dime, cataloged as DDO-002 (UVC-397, DMR-004), with a pronounced spread visible on the date, designer's initials JS, the back of the head, and the neck, accompanied by lighter spreading on IN GOD WE TRUST. Three die stages are documented. Stage A, in early die state, shows a small die gouge dot at the upper back of the head, with the reverse also in early state. Stage B places both sides at mid-die-state with no additional markers noted. Stage C reaches late die state, where a die crack develops across the back of the head and heavy abrasion appears around the profile, with the reverse also in late state. The strong spread on the date and initials makes this the leading doubled die obverse for the 1963 Roosevelt dime. The 1963 Philadelphia dime was the penultimate year of 90% silver composition before the switch to copper-nickel clad in 1965, giving it both variety and composition appeal. Examine the date digits for southward or eastward displacement, confirm on the JS initials, then assess die stage through the presence or absence of the back-of-head crack.
