Description

Falling in the lower-middle range of the proof DDO catalog for the 1963 Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-021 represents one of approximately two dozen proof-specific doubled die obverse varieties that have been documented for this single date. The Philadelphia Mint's proof operation in 1963 was the most productive proof cent run of the pre-shortage era, generating 3,075,645 coins that were individually struck at elevated pressure using chrome-plated, mirror-polished dies. The multi-impression hubbing process through which each proof die received its design created an independent opportunity for misalignment with every die manufactured, and when misalignment occurred, the resulting doubled image was permanently fixed in the die steel beneath the chrome finish. With each proof die pair retiring after approximately 3,000 impressions to preserve the surface quality expected of proof coinage, the total production consumed a substantial inventory of dies, and WDDO-021 emerged from one of these individually hubbed dies.
