1963 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-021
ErrorDescription
Falling in the lower-middle range of the proof DDO catalog for the 1963 Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-021 represents one of approximately two dozen proof-specific doubled die obverse varieties that have been documented for this single date. The Philadelphia Mint's proof operation in 1963 was the most productive proof cent run of the pre-shortage era, generating 3,075,645 coins that were individually struck at elevated pressure using chrome-plated, mirror-polished dies. The multi-impression hubbing process through which each proof die received its design created an independent opportunity for misalignment with every die manufactured, and when misalignment occurred, the resulting doubled image was permanently fixed in the die steel beneath the chrome finish. With each proof die pair retiring after approximately 3,000 impressions to preserve the surface quality expected of proof coinage, the total production consumed a substantial inventory of dies, and WDDO-021 emerged from one of these individually hubbed dies. Collectors seeking this variety should examine the obverse of 1963 proof cents under magnification with carefully controlled lighting, looking for secondary design images on the legends, date, and portrait elements. The absence of documented die markers for this variety means attribution depends primarily on matching the doubling pattern against published reference descriptions. Cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files, the coin was struck on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet and carries the Brenner-Gasparro design pairing.
