1963 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
Error
Description
Distinguished by a robust set of die markers across both sides of the coin, the 1963 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-016 offers variety collectors multiple independent confirmation points for attribution. On the obverse, a short diagonal die scratch crosses the top of Lincoln's forehead just beneath the hairline, a short vertical die gouge sits to the right of the upper S in TRUST, and another short vertical die gouge appears to the right of the second T in TRUST. The reverse contributes a strong die gouge to the right of the upper F in OF. This constellation of die surface features provides a fingerprint unique to this particular working die, allowing attributors to distinguish WDDO-016 from the many other proof DDO varieties documented for the 1963 date even when the doubling characteristics of two varieties appear superficially similar. The die was manufactured through the Philadelphia Mint's standard hubbing process and received the proof finishing treatment — chrome plating, selective frosting, and polishing — before entering the press line. Each proof die pair served approximately 3,000 impressions, so WDDO-016 exists on a limited number of coins within the total 1963 proof production of 3,075,645 Lincoln cents. The higher striking pressure used for proof coinage forces the planchet metal into every die detail more completely than business-strike operations, producing the sharp device edges and deep mirror fields that characterize proof coins. The 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet carries Brenner's Lincoln portrait and Gasparro's Memorial reverse.
