1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-030
ErrorDescription
Near the upper end of the currently documented 1963 P-mint DDO catalog, WDDO-030 of the Lincoln Memorial Cent marks the thirtieth attributed doubled die obverse variety for the Philadelphia Mint's 1963 cent production. Thirty DDO varieties from a single date and mint represents a significant body of attribution work, reflecting decades of research by specialists who have examined large quantities of this common-date cent under magnification. The Philadelphia Mint produced 754,110,000 business-strike cents in 1963, and the working die population required to sustain this volume provided the raw material for the DDO discoveries that continue to expand the catalog. Each variety in the sequence was produced by a distinct working die that received a measurably different misalignment during the hubbing process, and while some varieties may share similar doubling characteristics, their individual die markers and precise displacement measurements distinguish them from one another. For collectors, higher-numbered DDO varieties often present a greater attribution challenge because they may exhibit more subtle or localized doubling than the dramatic early entries in a catalog, and the absence of published die marker data for WDDO-030 adds to this complexity. The coin was struck on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet without a mint mark. Systematic examination under at least 10x magnification, with attention to the date numerals, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and Lincoln's portrait details, provides the best chance of detecting the secondary images that confirm a doubled die variety. Brenner's obverse and Gasparro's reverse adorn the coin.
