Description

As the twenty-fifth documented doubled die obverse for the 1963 P-mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-025 belongs to a catalog that has grown to impressive depth thanks to the sustained work of attribution specialists over several decades. The variety arose from a misalignment during the die hubbing process that left visible doubling on the obverse design elements, a defect permanently embedded in the working die steel and transmitted to every coin struck from it until the die was retired. The mid-century hubbing technology employed at the Philadelphia Mint was highly capable but not infallible, and the mechanical tolerances of the era permitted occasional fractional displacement between the working hub and the die blank during re-seating between impression cycles. These marginal displacements, sometimes measuring only a few thousandths of an inch, were sufficient to create the secondary images that variety collectors seek under magnification. The 1963 Philadelphia production of 754,110,000 business-strike cents on the 95% copper and 5% zinc composition was the second-to-last full-scale production year before the coin shortage of 1965-67 disrupted normal mint operations.
