1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-074
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting a Class V pivoted hub doubling from a counterclockwise spread pivoting at approximately 10 o'clock, the 1963 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-074 shows its doubled image most clearly on the bottom of the date numerals and the underside of Lincoln's bowtie, areas that lie farthest from the pivot axis and therefore display the greatest displacement. Class V pivoted doubling occurs when the working hub rotates fractionally around a fixed point between successive hubbing impressions, producing doubling that increases in magnitude with distance from the pivot. On the obverse, a short diagonal die gouge appears to the right of the top of the N in IN GOD WE TRUST, a die gouge in the form of a dot sits just above the hair midway between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST, and a short vertical die scratch runs between the upper U and S of TRUST. The reverse carries its own constellation of die markers: a light die scratch runs nearly parallel to the lettering through the center of the U in UNITED almost to the rim, a small die gouge sits to the right of the center of the D in UNITED, a small dot-shaped die gouge appears below the second S of STATES, and a short vertical die scratch is positioned above the right side of the F in OF. This extensive network of obverse and reverse die markers provides multiple independent confirmation points for attribution. Submitted by David Mulberry and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963 1c Pr WDDO-074, this proof variety was struck from chrome-plated dies at elevated pressure, with individual die pairs lasting approximately 3,000 impressions. The 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet carries Brenner's portrait paired with Gasparro's Memorial reverse.
