1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Strong spread on the date, WE TRUST, and LIBERTY combined with light spread on the forehead and bust point makes this tenth documented doubled die obverse for the 1963 Franklin Half Dollar one of the more visually prominent varieties in the series. Documented by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-207 and DMR-012, the strong spread on the date and motto produces clearly visible secondary images that can be identified under moderate magnification, while the lighter spread on the portrait details adds diagnostic depth. Stage A shows the obverse in early die state with the reverse listed as DDR-010 also in EDS, plus a die gouge dot under the L of HALF — meaning the obverse doubled die is paired with a documented doubled die reverse, creating a desirable die pair where both sides carry attributable variety features. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The 1963 was the final year of the Franklin Half Dollar, as the series was terminated mid-production following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963 to make way for the Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964. This historically charged final year saw large production volumes at Philadelphia, and the documentation of ten doubled die obverses reflects intense research into the terminal Franklin issues.
