1963 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Cataloged in the VarietyVista classification system with UVC-206 and DMR-011 cross-references, the 1963 Franklin Half Dollar DDO-009 displays light spread on LIBERTY — a subtle but diagnostically significant doubling on the principal obverse inscription. Three die states have been documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B records obverse and reverse at mid-die-state, and Stage C in late die state is also unconfirmed. This three-stage framework provides collectors the opportunity to track the die's progressive deterioration, though the unconfirmed early and late stages indicate that specimens from those periods have not yet been definitively identified. The light spread classification means the doubling is close enough that separation between primary and secondary images is minimal, requiring careful examination under magnification to distinguish from normal strike characteristics. The 1963 Franklin Half Dollar occupies the terminal position in its series — the last year Benjamin Franklin's portrait appeared on the half dollar before being replaced by the Kennedy design in 1964 following President Kennedy's assassination. Philadelphia struck over 22 million business strike 1963 halves, consuming numerous die pairs during the year's production. Nine doubled die obverses documented for this final-year issue reflects decades of collector attention to a date that carries end-of-series significance. Attributed by VarietyVista, DDO-009 contributes to one of the most thoroughly researched Franklin Half Dollar dates in the variety collecting specialty.
