1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-106

Description

Formerly listed as WDDR-223, this variety was reassigned by Brian A. Ribar to replace the original WDDR-106 listing, which was delisted because the doubling was considered too minor to warrant a separate catalog entry. The replacement variety carries its own Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on AMERICA, detectable on the reverse of a 1963 Jefferson nickel struck at Philadelphia. Reverse die markers include a die scratch above VE of FIVE and a die scratch through the C of CENTS, while no obverse markers have been noted. The administrative history of this catalog number — a minor listing delisted and then its number reassigned to a different die — illustrates the rigorous self-correction practiced within the Wexler doubled die attribution system, where catalog integrity is maintained by removing unworthy entries and repurposing their numbers rather than leaving gaps. Philadelphia's 1963 nickel production of over 178 million pieces generated what may be the single densest concentration of WDDR varieties for any Jefferson nickel date, with catalog numbers extending past 200.
