1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-084

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1963 Jefferson Nickel carries a doubled die reverse with close Class II spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing in intensity from left to right. The doubling also affects the right side of the Monticello building. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin comes from the final full year before the Coinage Act of 1965 transformed American coinage. This variety has a notable catalog history: it was formerly listed as WDDR-232, but was subsequently renumbered to replace the original WDDR-084, which had been delisted as too minor to warrant continued inclusion. Such renumbering events are common in active attribution catalogs and are preserved here for collectors cross-referencing older publications. On the obverse, a slanted die scratch below the G of GOD provides an attribution marker. The reverse carries two short die gouges on the upper left portion of the F in FIVE. The Class II spread increasing left to right indicates rotational hub doubling, where the pivot point lay to the left of the affected legends during die manufacture.
