Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-801, this 1963 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel carries a doubled die reverse attributed by VarietyVista under die classification UVC-1220 with marker reference DMR-087. The variety displays a strong triple spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA that increases in magnitude from left to right, with additional doubling on UNITED STATES OF, CENTS, and the last O of MONTICELLO. The die progressed through three stages: Stage A shows a die gouge under the N of UNITED with both reverse and obverse in early-to-mid die state, Stage B finds both sides in mid die state, and Stage C shows both in late die state. The FS-801 Cherrypickers designation indicates this variety has been recognized as significant enough for inclusion in Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton's standard reference for collectible die varieties. The progressive triple spread increasing across the legends from left to right is characteristic of rotational hub doubling and creates a visually dramatic effect under magnification that makes DDR-080 one of the more rewarding Jefferson Nickel reverse varieties to examine.
