Description

Seventy-second cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1963 Jefferson Nickel — a staggering count that reflects both Philadelphia's enormous 178,851,645 nickel production and the intensive variety research conducted on proof and business strike dies from this late-date original design era. DDR-072 exhibits light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing in intensity from left to right, a gradient pattern suggesting pivoted or rotational hub displacement where one side of the die received greater offset than the other. Die markers UVC-1212 and DMR-079 anchor the attribution with three stages: Stage A showing both reverse and obverse at Early-to-Mid Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). VarietyVista cataloged this variety within the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series, Felix Schlag's enduring portrait and Monticello reverse that served for sixty-five years before the 2004-2005 Westward Journey redesign. The increasing spread from left to right across the legend provides a directional diagnostic: collectors should begin examination at the right side of E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA where the doubling is strongest, then trace it leftward as it diminishes toward UNITED — a gradient that confirms the pivoted hub mechanism and distinguishes DDR-072 from constant-spread varieties.
