Description

Sharing the same progressive left-to-right spread pattern as its DDR-003 counterpart but elevated to medium intensity, DDR-007 on the 1963 Jefferson Nickel exhibits medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right across both inscriptions. Die markers UVC-1149 and DMR-016 uniquely identify this working die. The upgrade from light (DDR-003) to medium intensity means DDR-007's hub displacement was substantially larger, producing doubling visible at lower magnification and with wider separation between primary and secondary letter images across the affected inscriptions. While both varieties share the directional gradient characteristic of pivoted hub doubling — with the pivot point situated to the left of the inscriptions — DDR-007's medium strength produces a more dramatic visual progression from the barely-detectable left ends to the clearly doubled right ends of each inscription. The UVC numbering (DDR-003 carries UVC-1145, DDR-007 carries UVC-1149) indicates these dies were cataloged within close proximity in the VarietyVista system, reflecting their shared date-mint origin though each represents an independent working die with its own distinct hub misalignment event. The DMR designations (DMR-012 for DDR-003 versus DMR-016 for DDR-007) document different die-specific characteristics that provide attribution independent of the doubling itself. On Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, the two affected inscriptions arc above and around the building facade, and the medium-intensity progressive spread on DDR-007 is best confirmed by comparing letter thickness at the left and right extremes of each inscription under 5x to 7x magnification — a lower magnification requirement than DDR-003 owing to the stronger displacement.
